Though we’ve focused on the best brunches around Auckland, many of these cafes and restaurants are open right throughout the day.

Cafes in Auckland are serious business! With amazing food and coffee on the menu, you can be sure that the best of the best cafes soon make themselves known across the city.

Indeed, New Zealander’s are widely known as being coffee connoisseurs – caffeinated drinks are one thing we take incredibly seriously.

Brunch too has become a bit of a local institution on a Sunday morning.

Eggs Benedict, French toast, waffles, pancakes, mushrooms on toast – we could go on and on. This fantastic combination of breakfast and is a delicious way to start the day on the right foot.

Dear Coasties – Orewa

Dear Coasties is the spot to head to in Orewa for some of the best Insta-worthy food on the coast.

Their menu is adventurous and includes options such as kimchi pancakes and soft shell crab Benedict. They also do a great job catering to dietary requirements – with fantastic gluten free and vegan options, they’ve got you covered!

To drink, along with the classics, they offer every kind of plant latte you can think of, as well as energising superfood smoothies.

Common Ground Eatery – Browns Bay

Common Ground Eatery in Browns Bay offers a unique menu serving up some breakfasts with character.

Here you can eat fried brioche with caramelised banana, octopus omelette, coconut hotcakes and kimchi fried rice just to name a few dishes!

They are located right on the beach and are beautifully decorated with greenery everywhere.

If you need a post-swim cold drink hit, their vegan smoothies are the way to go!

Generosity Coffee – Birkenhead

Generosity Coffee really lives up to its name, supporting local charities both in their community, and across New Zealand. Their coffee is roasted onsite and sold to help support charities such as the Breast Cancer Foundation. They do this by donating 20% of the value of each bag.

In their café, they also have a great range of sweets and savouries available alongside their delicious coffee, making for a great brunch on the go.

House of Chocolate Dessert Café & Cakery – Takapuna

Chocoholics look no further! Takapuna’s House of Chocolate Dessert Café and Cakery offers almost every kind of chocolate dessert you can think of plus more.

They are known for their award winning chocolates, specialty cakes, and homemade hot chocs and mochas. We recommend the Chocolate Ball dessert: Your choice of ice cream encased in a hard chocolate shell, surrounded by fruit and chocolate sauce.

If chocolate’s not your thing, you can feast on mains such as toast with avo, halloumi and salmon!

They also offer a range of delicious desserts (with and without chocolate) and waffles with a massive variety of toppings.

Honey Cafe – Ponsonby

Honey Cafe is one of the ultimate brunch spots in Auckland. Serving up Insta-friendly plates that are packed with flavour, you really can’t go wrong at this fabulous cafe!

They have an extensive menu, offering sweet and savoury, healthy and honest-to-goodness treats.

We recommend checking out their banoffee French toast (cinnamon and vanilla dipped brioche, salted caramel panna cotta, honeycomb, grilled banana, fresh fruits, choc crumble, berry coulis and vanilla maple syrup) and the fried buttermilk chicken and waffle (free range streaky bacon, gochujang aioli, house slaw, spring onion and sriracha maple syrup on side)

What’s more, the prices are surprisingly reasonable for food that’s so wonderful!

Bread and Butter Bakery and Café has three locations in Grey Lynn, Parnell Farmers Market, and Grey Lynn Farmers Market.

Offering up a delectable variety of breads, meals, desserts and hot drinks, you will be spoilt for choice when you pay any of their locations a visit!

Among other types of bread, there you will find sourdough, rye, baguettes, and fresh pretzels too.

They also offer breakfast and lunch menus all day, so you can take things at your own pace.

Odettes Eatery

Odettes is a highly popular café in the city centre serving up quality food right through the day.

The menu is Mediterranean style, and they know how to put on a feast!

Breakfast includes options such at the smokehouse salmon and turmeric omelette.

For dinner, we suggest you get a few plates to share, such as the portobello mushroom steaks, and chargrilled lamb cutlets, before finishing your night out in Auckland with a sweet treat.

Eden Espresso Bar is highly rated for its commitment to good espresso. It’s the kind of place where people go out of their way to get a good cup of coffee in the morning.

Also serving up Danish buns, pies, sandwiches and pastries, it’s a quick fix for breakfast on the way to work, or a cruisey caffeinated morning.

For those who have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to work, you’re in luck. They open up at 5am on weekdays.

It’s Java

It’s Java is a specialist of Indonesian street food and coffee. Though it’s not your classic bunch-fare, it’s well worth checking out.

As well as the coffee and tea classics, you can try Indonesian kopi tubruk coffee (a thick, sweet black coffee), or lychee iced tea.

To eat, there are so many good options including crispy fried duck, Javanese beef ribs and nasi goreng. This is a great brunch options (if you’re looking for something more on the lunch side of things.)

Burbs Eatery – Farm Cove

Burbs Eatery are known for their delicious cheese scones and homemade preserves. Some might even say they are one of the best cafes in Auckland to get your scone fix!

Head there for morning tea, and enjoy a scone along with one of their Allpress coffees.

Sometimes the simple things done well really are the best!

Woolfy’s – East Tamaki

Woolfy’s serve up beautiful brunches in East Tamaki.

Grab a cup of their Kokako Coffee, and French toast for a filling Saturday breakfast. Complete with the most incredible toppings, this post is seriously Instagrammable!

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try one of their superfood lattes with beetroot or tumeric.

On the weekends it’s an especially great place to take kids, as they serve up candy floss!

Ampersand Eatery – Orakei

Ampersand is a great all-day choice as they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you’re looking for a great place to try freshly roasted coffee, this is it – they freshly roast onsite. They even offer coffee tastings, if you are looking to learn about different bean varieties.

With amazing interior design and quality food, Ampersand is a favourite of ours and an especially strong option for lunch!

Lola Cafe – Mt Wellington

Lola Cafe is owned by the same owner as the more well known Flour Mill in Epsom, creating a legacy of great cafes in Auckland. This cafe is making its own mark in Mt Wellington, however!

With lots of colour, neon and pink, it’s chocka-block full of fun vibes!

Some of the menu highlights include the creamy mushrooms, pancakes, and the amazing cabinet cakes.

Every visit to Lola feels like a treat.

Rosebank Coffee & Kitchen – Avondale

Rosebank is one of the most talked about cafes out west. With their focus on hospitality, they’ve created a relaxed and friendly environment for everyone to enjoy.

Their menu includes some unique choices such as their drunken mushroom (soaked in red wine) and housemade gnocchi.

They also have a fantastic meeting room that is available for hire, making this the perfect spot for your next work lunch.

L’oeuf – Mt Albert

L’oeuf is a little unusual in the sense that their entire menu is focused on eggs – the clue was in the name though!

They have an Asian fusion menu that includes options such as ramen, and banh mi. And of course, the menu would not be complete without all of the ways they present eggs, including eggs benny, and their specialty ‘the nest’, which is crumbed boiled eggs in a filo pastry nest.

Calling all egg lovers – this place is for you!

Little Sister Café – Henderson

Little Sister Café serves up classic brunch treats with a twist.

On their menu you can find a bagel board, for those like us who can’t simply choose one.

Their menu is inspired by South-East Asia. With this in mind, it’s not surprising to find Balinese sticky black rice on their brunch menu.

And of course, they’ll happily bring some sweetness to your morning in the form of vanilla bean hotcakes.

Deco Eatery – Titirangi

Deco Eatery is inspired by Turkey, and brings a unique menu with delicious options such as Dolma, Jordanian lamb, Greek meatballs, and Mezze platters.

For all things Turkish, pair a Turkish coffee or tea with some Turkish delight!

They also have plenty of alcoholic options, with cocktails, and affogatos (with Frangelico, Kahlua or Baileys).

If all of this still isn’t enough to convince you, they also roast their coffee in house!

Kind Café & Eatery – Morningside

Kind’s specialty is delicious vegan food.

We recommend their amazing corn tostadas, and also the cakes in the cabinet.

If you are in the mood, you can even start your day with a breakfast mimosa!

You may know that Kind is the sister café of Crave Café – both of which are found on the same street. Both of these cafes are run as social enterprises, and exist to make Morningside an awesome place to live!

Kind has a strong environmental focus, and is trying to encourage plant-based diets, as well as helping to get more plants growing in the neighbourhood. They even offer cooking classes and composting workshops.

All of this definitely makes them one of the best vegan-friendly cafes in Auckland.

Percy Café – Mangere

Percy is all around beautiful – from their gorgeous views, to their food presentation and even their garden.

Everything there is delicious but one of their real menu highlights is the breakfast bao (which comes with pork belly and a fried egg).

If you are feeling more adventurous, you could sample the All Black themed charcoal smoothie, or stick to the always tasty Kōkako coffee.

Though it’s not exclusively vegan or vegetarian, Percy does an amazing job of catering to them!

Friend of the Farmer – Takanini

Friend of the Farmer has beautiful views and greenery, with their indoor and outdoor seating at Kings Plant Barn.

They have some classic food options, soups, pastas, burgers and desserts, as well as some very reasonably priced drinks.

This is a great place to bring kids on the weekends, to chill out with a book and of course, to relax in amongst your plant shopping!

Urban Soul Cafe – Manukau and Karaka

Last but not least, Urban Soul is one of the most highly rated cafes in South Auckland.

From their delicious cabinet food to their beautifully presented plates – everything is a treat.

Their menu highlights include the BLT, Waffles, and Big breakfast.

You can also sample their awesome cocktails (such as the urban mule with ginger beer and vodka) or get down on their smoothies (we recommend their snickers smoothie!)

Don’t head to Manukau without paying Urban Soul a visit.
