The best New Zealand travel apps and websites
If you’re visiting New Zealand on vacation, we recommend familiarising yourself with the following apps and websites.
They’ll help you save money and improve your trip – we guarantee it!
Our favourite New Zealand Travel Apps
Transport apps
NZTD
Everyone flying into New Zealand needs to complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
This can be done on the plane (using a paper form), online, or through this app (no more than 24 hours before your flight).
Gaspy
Who doesn’t want to save money on fuel?
The Gaspy app shares the price of fuel at different petrol stations, so you can choose where you top up.
Camping & freedom camping Apps
Rankers Camping NZ
If you’re planning to camp in New Zealand, we recommend downloading the Rankers Camping NZ app.
With holiday parks, DOC campgrounds and freedom camping spots, they cover all possible bases. You’ll even find options for non-self-contained vans, tents and people travelling with dogs.
Plus, you can download an offline version of Rankers Camping NZ to use when you don’t have data/reception.
Even if you’re not camping, it’s great for finding places of interest, lookout points etc.
Maaike McClelland, NZTT member
Campermate Australia & NZ
Browse a map for freedom camping spots, holiday parks, accommodations, activities and more.
WikiCamps New Zealand
Wikicamps New Zealand is another great app to load to your phone if you’re looking to camp here.
Though there is a small cost to download this app, it is considered one of the best when it comes to finding freedom camping spots.
You can also access Wikicamps New Zealand via its website.
Supermarkets & food apps
If you plan to visit supermarkets in New Zealand, we suggest loading the following apps as they save you money when shopping.
New World
New World has stores right across the country.
However, to get the app working on your phone you will need a New Zealand address.
We suggest talking to one of your accommodation providers to see if you can use their postal address to sign up.
Once your account is approved, you can use the app – there’s no need for a physical card.
MyCountdown
Countdown (which is in the process of rebranding to Woolworths) also offers club prices and personalised discount boosts to members.
As with New World, it’s free to sign up.
If you plan to shop a lot, it’s worth scanning your card too. When you spend $2,000 with them, you’ll get a $15 e-voucher.
Foodprint
Save money on tasty treats and food nearby.
Cafes, bakeries, restaurants and grocers load any spare food items they have to the app, allowing you to purchase them at a heavy discount, ready for collection before they close.
First Table
First Table is our favourite way to save money when dining out.
Simply pre-book a table (either the first or last sitting), pay a small booking fee, and receive a 50% discount on all your food!

The best New Zealand travel websites
Transport websites
Waka Kotahi – Traffic and travel information
Waka Kotahi looks after roads in New Zealand and its website is the best place to check for road closures, delays and other updates.
We recommend checking it before you start a big road trip in Aotearoa.
AA
If you’re driving in New Zealand for the first time, we suggest checking out the AA website.
There, you’ll find maps, information on drive time and road rules.
NZ topo maps
Though most people won’t have a need for topo maps, trampers may benefit from using them.
NZ Topo Maps is our favourite.
Weather websites in NZ
Met Service
Though the weather in New Zealand is notoriously hard to predict, we do our best.
Met Service is the best place to look for weather forecasts.
Niwa UV
The sun is strong in New Zealand, but you can use Niwa UV to get a sense of just how strong it is on a given day (in key parts of the country).
Discount websites
New Zealand Travel Tips

Bookme is a popular New Zealand discount site.
