Enjoy a meal with friends at Fang in Parnell.

The Very Best Parnell Restaurants

In no particular order, these are our favourite Parnell eateries.

1. Fang

Fang is an Asian fusion restaurant simply bursting with flavour and fun!

The brand tells the dystopian story of a rogue chef (‘Fang’) who defies government orders for citizens to eat only cheap, flavourless food. Instead our hero continues to keep delicious traditional Sichuan recipes alive.

And luckily for you, the dishes at Fang deliver all that and more.

Fang’s signature dishes include:

  • boiled dumplings with free-range pork mince and homemade sweet soy chilli sauce
  • kung pao soft shell crab with soy, roasted peanut, edamame and cauliflower puree
  • wolf fang potato chips with peanuts and home-made Sichuan spicy mayonnaise.

There’s a great vegetarian menu too, if that’s your jam.

Fang also serves up some delicious desserts (ricotta orange doughnuts, anyone?) to round out your meal with something sweet.

Pro Tip: If you choose to dine at Fang’s, don’t forget your phone! The restaurant and the dishes are colourful, interesting and highly ‘instagrammable’.

2. Pasture – Perhaps the Most Memorable of all Parnell Restaurants

If you like dining experiences that offer something different, and you’re not afraid to pay for the privilege, then Pasture is the place for you.

Pasture is not your typical fine dining restaurant by any stretch of the imagination.

This tiny, exclusive restaurant only seats six people alongside one another. You’ll dine for an incredible 3.5 hours alongside their small open kitchen.

There, diners enjoy anywhere between 17 and 21 courses. You won’t find any hint of a menu online though, theirs is totally customised.

What Pasture does promise is that they work with whole animals, seafood, and line-caught fish. And of course, everything is out-of-this-world delicious.

If you love to try new things and have little or no dietary requirements, Pasture offers a memorable dining experience. It’s a great venue for a special occasion and is highly recommended for couples celebrating anniversaries, engagements and other milestones.

Given Pasture’s strictly limited capacity and cult following, you may find it difficult to get a reservation —so we recommend booking as early as possible!

3. Va Bene

A relative newcomer on the Parnell dining scene, Va Bene wine bar and eatery opened in 2021.

With all the buzz and sophistication of a typical European wine bar, Va Bene is an ideal spot to meet friends and enjoy some champagne, cocktails and simple dishes with European flair.

The chef and co-owner has worked in restaurants in Paris and other parts of France, so it’s safe to say he knows what he’s doing!

Va Bene is unique in that every dish is expertly prepared with no more than six ingredients. The menu isn’t large, but you can be assured that every dish is both tasty and perfectly balanced.

There are a number of small plates on offer that are perfect for sharing and a small selection of larger plates too. These can either be shared or enjoyed as a main course.

And sharing is encouraged at Va Bene — whether it’s sharing a dish or sharing a conversation at the 24-seat communal table which takes pride of place at the centre of the restaurant.

4. Barulho

Even if you’re relatively familiar with Parnell, you may not have come across Barulho just yet.

Set away from most of the eateries on bustling Parnell Road, Barulho occupies a space on a dark lane — but this hasn’t stopped keen diners from discovering all it has to offer.

Barulho has grown to take up more space since it first opened a few years back. This is a testament to both the quality of the food on offer and the friendly, casual atmosphere.

Spanish food is Barulho’s speciality, but possibly not like you’ve had it before.

You’ll find heroes like octopus, ceviche and meatballs, but with new and exciting combinations.

The octopus comes with paprika, olives, blood orange and almonds while the meatballs are stuffed with provolone and served with crispy sage.

There are also Portuguese tarts and churros available for those with a sweet-tooth.

With outdoor dining available and a great drinks list, Barulho is an ideal venue for a long weekend lunch.

5. Nem

This ‘Vietnamese Fusion House’ is tucked away below street level on — you guessed it — Parnell Road! But as you set foot inside Nem you’ll instantly feel welcome thanks to the delightful décor and friendly staff.

The Nem menu is large enough that there is plenty of choice, but not so big that it’s overwhelming.

You’ll find your favourites like pho, summer rolls and beef salad, but will also be tickled by some unexpected dishes with clever names like ‘mud bathing duck’ or ‘shaking beef’.

One particular dish Nem is known for is their flaming coconut prawn curry. This is quite literally served in a flaming coconut.

If you want to elicit admiring ‘oohs’ and ‘aahhs’ from fellow diners or get some social media-worthy content, the flaming coconut prawn curry is the dish for you.

Another thing Nem does well is its variety of colourful cocktails and mocktails. We recommend you try the refreshing Hanoi sunset, sweet fluffy duck or the decadent salted caramel espresso martini.

311 Parnell Road.

6. Oh Calcutta

Oh Calcutta is not just one of the best restaurants in Parnell, but is frequently listed among the best restaurants in central Auckland.

This Indian restaurant has been receiving rave reviews for decades. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who has been here and had a bad experience.

So what is it exactly that has people talking?

In short, it’s the age-old combination of incredible food and attentive service.

The butter chicken is often referred to as the very best butter chicken around, with the perfect level of depth, spice and heat.

And, if like us, you always find it hard to decide what curries to order, you can’t go past their banquet menu. This includes vegetarian, beef, chicken, prawn and lamb curries, as well as naan, rice and a selection of entrees.

Oh Calcutta describes itself as ‘combining the traditional with the new’, being unafraid to incorporate new flavour combinations as they are discovered — but with authentic, honest ingredients and techniques that makes Indian food so irresistible.

It’s definitely worth checking them out when you’re next looking for flavourful cuisine in Central Auckland.

7. Gerome

Rounding out our list of the best restaurants in Parnell is a Greek favourite, Gerome.

This beautifully designed, contemporary restaurant is fitted out with tasteful blue velvet booths and a luxe-feeling décor. This is the type of restaurant where you take a moment to admire your surroundings once seated.

The food here is described as modern Greek and the menu differs slightly between lunch and dinner.

During the day there are a selection of souvlaki, but in the evening this section makes way for more substantial offerings — think melt-in-your-mouth lamb shoulder with carrot tzatziki, beef rib eye with potato skordalia and chicken thigh with almond gremolata.

Everything they serve is incredibly delicious and jam-packed with flavour.

If you enjoy your Greek food, served with nice wine and a touch of stylish ambience, Gerome is a restaurant well worth booking.
