Auckland accommodation spotlight: Cordis – 5 star luxury in the city

Join us as we share our thoughts on Cordis, Auckland – the largest hotel in New Zealand and one of the most luxurious in the City of Sails.

Whether you’re stopping off in Auckland as you transit to another destination, or you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion in your own backyard, a stay at Cordis could be just the ticket.

With its newly opened 17-story Pinnacle Tower, this is now the largest hotel in New Zealand.

However, when staying there, you can expect all of the wonderful facilities that such a significant hotel would have, but with the touches of more boutique accommodation.

In our experience, Cordis Auckland really is the best of everything.

What Is It Like to Stay at the Cordis Auckland?

You’ll find the Cordis hotel at 83 Symonds Street, Grafton, Auckland 1010.

This positions you perfectly at the top of the city, looking down on all the action.

The area is well-serviced by public transport and there is the option for both valet and self-parking depending on your budget and preference.

Incredible Views of Auckland

Thanks to its position at the top of the CBD, and its towering height, the Pinnacle Tower offers outstanding views of the city. Rooms look out onto the Waitematā Harbour, the Harbour Bridge, One Tree Hill, Rangitoto, Mount Eden and/or the Sky Tower, depending on their orientation.

To stand at the floor to ceiling glass windows and soak up the sights of the city below is a real treat.

Welcome to Your Hotel Haven

Given the Pinnacle Tower was only opened in December 2021, it’s no wonder the rooms feel brand new.

We were incredibly impressed by the quality of the fit out, the stylish interior decoration and the luxurious feel of the common areas throughout the hotel.

Our room was modern, whilst still reflecting a number of more traditional luxurious hotel features, including a stunning fully-tiled bathroom, complete with rain-shower.

Beautiful fully-tiled bathrooms are a luxurious touch.

As you would expect in a hotel of this calibre, the bed was incredibly comfortable and the sheets perfectly crisp. Double glazing ensures any street noise is locked away and the rooms are well sound-proofed, allowing for a great night’s rest.

We also loved that the air-conditioning was so easy to use (giving us full control of the temperature of our room) and that we had access to a well-stocked kitchenette – not that we were there to cook!

Families and groups are catered for at Cordis Auckland too, with a range of inter-connecting rooms available. This provides the ultimate in flexibility and functionality.

Regardless of the room you choose, you will be treated to a combination of plush, comfortable furnishings and natural South-Pacific-inspired textures.

Everything about this hotel is locally inspired and it couldn’t be more beautiful.

Dining at Cordis Auckland

Cordis is home to a number of acclaimed restaurants and bars, including Eight and their newest addition, Our Land is Alive.

Dinner at Our Land is Alive

We chose to enjoy a relaxed but stylish evening at Cordis’s new destination bar – Our Land is Alive.

With a tasteful focus on Kiwi hospitality, nature and flavours, this beautifully decorated venue is the perfect place to enjoy an expertly mixed cocktail with friends or a tasty meal.

Our mains were generously portioned and delicious. I opted for a veal schnitzel whilst Nathan had a perfectly cooked steak – both of which we would happily order again.

Unfortunately, we were too full to order desserts but they looked amazing, so we will definitely be back to test them out!

Whether you pull up a seat at the bar, watch the game on their big-screen TV, relax outside with your date, or tuck yourself away in a quiet corner (as we opted to do), this bar caters to practically everyone.

As an added bonus, it’s open to the public, so you’re welcome to pay them a visit even if you’re not staying at the hotel. Add this to your things-to-do list in Auckland at night for a fantastic evening.

Breakfast at Eight

The next morning we popped along to Eight for breakfast.

Whilst under the red traffic light system, the normal buffet isn’t available, but a seated table service is, along with a à la carte menu.

We’ve been told that the Eight buffet (both breakfast and dinner) are legendary so have no doubt that we’ll need to return when they’re able to operate as they normally do again!

We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals though and found the service to be second-to-none.

Relax and Unwind at Cordis Auckland

With gorgeous rooms, delicious food and plenty to do, this Cordis hotel is the ultimate staycation trifecta.

Choose to make the most of their facilities, or sit back and relax, doing next to nothing – the choice is entirely yours.

Enjoy Their Extensive Art Collection

We were surprised to learn that Cordis is home to the largest locally commissioned art collection in Aotearoa New Zealand – and you’re able to enjoy it throughout your stay.

Thoughtfully curated, guests are able to view almost 50 different innovative commissions spread across the hotel. These span a number of different mediums, created by nine of New Zealand’s most prominent contemporary artists.

Even walking between the lobby and Pinnacle Towers, you’ll be treated to an immersive walkway of art, known at the Art Promenade.

Take a Dip in the Rooftop Pool or Enjoy the Spa

Cordis Auckland have a outdoor pool that is kept at 27 degrees Celsius year round, along with a spa pool that is heated to 37 degrees Celsius.

Both pools are framed by palms, sun loungers and umbrellas, providing a beautiful spot to relax (whether you’ve had a busy week or are looking to shake off jet lag). For the ultimate treat, they even offer a poolside service with snacks and refreshments in the summer season.

Should you wish, you’re also able to head along to the Chuan Spa. From there, you’re able to sign up to a series of services, including massage, facials, saunas, herbal steam rooms and more.

Or, if active relaxing is more your thing, there’s also a fully-equipped fitness centre.

Cordis – An Auckland Favourite

Every part of our stay in the Pinnacle Towers was fabulous – the food, service and our room.

Whether you’re an Aucklander looking to treat yourself to a luxurious staycation, or you’re a tourist passing through on an Aotearoa adventure, we unreservedly recommend you pay a visit to the newly opened Pinnacle Towers at Cordis.
