The Dark Sky Sanctuary of Aotea Great Barrier Island is perfect for stargazing!
You’ll find Aotea in the Hauraki Gulf, just a 30-minute flight from Auckland Airport, or 4.5 hours on the Sealink ferry from Central Auckland.
And getting to this off-the-beaten-track subtropical island is part of the adventure.
To stargaze here, you will have to stay overnight – but we recommend you stay longer. The island is stunning!
Away from city lights and as an off-the-grid island, light pollution is minimal.
As an official International Dark Sky Sanctuary, dark skies and stunning Milky Way shots are standard practice (at the right time of the year).
