The best things to do in Sydney with kids

1. Visit Taronga Zoo

On the harbour’s north shore, you’ll see native animals and those from across the globe at the Taronga Zoo – a favourite spot for families visiting Sydney.

Book the kids (12 – 17 years) into a behind the scenes experience to be a zoo keeper for the day or get up close to a native koala.

Kids from 3 years up can also take on the Wild Ropes course at the zoo. This course provides an extra special view of the Taronga animals and the Sydney Harbour.

What’s more, your ticket to the zoo includes a ferry pass, so you can the kids can enjoy stunning harbour views on the way there and back.

2. Take a surf lesson

Ready to hit the waves?

Sydney surf lessons are a great option for the whole family.

Pack your swimmers and head to Bondi for a small group 2-hour surf lesson, aimed at kids 12 years and older.

Whether you have a little experience, or none at all, this is an excellent place to hang ten.

3. Spot whales on the Sydney Harbour

Whale watching off Sydney is our favourite family-friendly activity in the second half of the year – from May to November.

Sail across Sydney’s world-famous harbour on a custom-built whale watching boat, while you keep your eyes peeled for those ever-important whale tails.

And though the kids will love spotting a variety of whales (including humpbacks, southern right whales and orcas), we know the adults in your group will too!

4. Sail a pirate boat – perfect for the littlies

For the smaller members of the family, join ‘me hearties’ on a pirate cruise aboard a tall ship from The Rocks in Sydney Harbour.

This theatrical experience lasts 90 minutes, allowing kids to help hoist the sails, climb the mast and steer the ship!

This is the stuff of dreams for little pirates, and an experience totally unique to Sydney.

5. Visit Luna Park

Nestled on the edge of the harbour, Sydney’s iconic amusement park, Luna Park, is a hit with families.

From the thrilling wild mouse roller coaster to the nostalgic ferris wheel, it offers a mix of classic and modern rides that cater to all ages.

The park’s fun atmosphere, complete with carnival games, performances and food stalls, adds to the buzz.

We think it’s the perfect place to make fun family memories against the backdrop of Sydney’s beautiful skyline.

VR combines hands on activity with wearable technology, making for an experience unlike anything else.

It really needs to be experienced to be believed!

You’ll find a number of these in the city, most of which are suitable for kids 10 years and over – and they’re sure to be a hit with older kids.

7. Visit Featherdale Wildlife Park

If your little ones are animal lovers (or perhaps you are!) Featherdale Wildlife Park is a great alternative to Taronga Zoo – in fact, many prefer it.

This award-winning park is home to Australia’s largest collection of native wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas and a variety of bird species.

As visitors, you’ll can enjoy close encounters with these animals in a safe and educational environment – and you’ll have the opportunity to snap some very special photos too.
