Waimangu Volcanic Valley is one of our favourite geothermal areas in Rotorua.

An easy 30-minute drive from town, this is the only place in the world that can pinpoint the exact time its geothermal activity started.

You’ll start your 4km walk by winding your way down into the valley. Throughout your stroll, you’ll enjoy stunning views, bubbling lakes, boiling streams and native bush. The walk itself is easy, and for the most part, is flat or downhill.

You’ll see a number of memorable natural attractions including:

  • Frying Pan Lake – the largest natural thermal spring in the world
  • Inferno Crater – a stunning turquoise hot water lake
  • Silica terraces
  • An intriguing hot water stream.

Once you’ve soaked up the sights, you’ll continue on your walk towards the wetlands and Lake Rotomahana. This was once home to the world-renowned Pink and White Terrace. Sadly these were destroyed in the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. That eruption birthed Waimangu Valley as we know it now though, so that’s a silver lining of sorts. Incredibly, this event enlarged the lake to 20 times its original size!

Jump onboard their boat for a 45-minute guided tour of Lake Rotomahana. This includes a visit to the old site of the Pink and White Terraces, along with a visit to geothermally active cliffs and a number of geysers.

Throughout your walk, you’ll be able to make use of the Waimangu Volcanic Valley app. It is full of interesting information and allows you to see how the area looked before the massive eruption over a decade ago.

When you’re ready to head home, a bus will take you back up the hill and to your car. This same bus can be used to cut out parts of the walking trail too, opening the park up to those who aren’t able to walk the full distance.

We highly recommend visiting Waimangu Volcanic Valley when you’re next in Rotorua!
