Packrafting is a popular adventure activity where you’ll paddle your own inflatable kayak (singles and doubles are available) downstream, navigating rapids, under the watchful eye of your guide.
But which tour is right for you?
Hokitika Gorge Thrill-Seekers Tour
The flagship Hokitika Gorge Thrill-Seeker’s day tour operates from January through to April on the Hokitika River.
This tour involves approximately 1.5 hours of moderate hiking and the same amount of time on the river, paddling up to Class 2 rapids.

It also includes a float through the iconic Hokitika Gorge, allowing you to see it from a perspective that few get to enjoy.
All equipment and lunch is provided on this small group tour. You’ll have a maximum of only 6 people out on the river, and a guide ratio of 3:1.
A moderate level of fitness and comfort around water is required, but experience packrafting is not.

Wilderness Trail Chill-Seeker’s tour
If you’re visiting earlier in the season or are less enthusiastic about the whitewater component, be sure to check out the Wilderness Trail Chill-Seeker’s tour which runs on the Taramakau river alongside the West Coast Wilderness Trail between Kumara and Camerons.
You’ll spend the entirety of this tour on the river (so no walking) and the rapids are mellower but the scenery is still spectacular!
These trips are available in November and December (and at other times, by request).
