Daytime Dates in Auckland

For Food Lovers

Visit a Farmer’s Market

We love wandering around the local farmer’s market. There is always plenty of delicious food to try – cheese, fresh veggies and fine wine – and the opportunity to pick up ingredients for a romantic meal later in the day.

If you’d prefer to dine on the spot, modern farmers’ markets serve plenty of fresh food, making a visit the perfect date – even if you don’t intend to continue it later.

Join a Wine Tour

If you enjoy fine wine, you’ll be pleased to know that Auckland is home to a number of fantastic vineyards and wineries.

Waiheke Island is world-famous for its premium wines and it’s easily accessible from Auckland City. To get there you’ll hop on the ferry. Once there you can choose between a number of different award-winning wineries.

If you’d prefer to drive, we suggest visiting Kumeu. Located just 25 minutes from Auckland, this is where Croatian immigrants first decided to make wine in the 20th century. Now, we get to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Last but not least, Matakana is a 50-minute drive from Auckland (and is also home to an amazing farmers’ market). There you can taste Syrah, Sangiovese, Montepulciano and Pinotage. You’ll also be able to enjoy chardonnay, Viognier and pinot gris in this region.

For Nature Lovers

Take a Hike

If you both like nature we recommend heading out on a hike in Auckland. The region is spoilt with a diverse range of hikes – regional parks, volcanic peaks, coastal views – they’re all there.

Even better, pack up a picnic and head out for the day on one our the fantastic trails in the region.

We recommend you start with, Rangitoto Island. The Summit Track allows you to walk through a pōhutukawa forest and lava fields. You will also enjoy stunning panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.

What an atypical (but fabulous) date!

Go Horseback Riding

There’s a reason they always include a horseback riding date (or two) on the Bachelor – it’s a great romantic date idea.

Fortunately, Auckland has a variety of horseback riding options available.

Delight yourself with a view from the top of Waiheke Island or splash in the surf at Muriwai.

In any case, horse riding is a great option if you love an adventurous date.

Known as the City of Sails, Auckland is the perfect place to hit the harbour.

The maritime museum offers variety of trips, from the huge sailboat to smaller ones, allowing you to feel like an old-time sailor.

Other companies include lunch, and sometimes offer cruise nights – both making for a perfect date.

The Auckland Maritime Museum is located on Corner Quay and Hobson Streets, Viaduct Harbour. It is open every day except on Christmas from 10 am to 5 pm.

Refresh the Classics

If you’re looking for some classic (but memorable) dates ideas in Auckland, you’ll want to check these out.

Dine Out at a Restaurant

Auckland has a great selection of amazing restaurants making it easy to treat your date to a lovely evening.

If you really want to impress, you should consider hitting the Sky Tower to have dinner at one of their restaurants. There you’ll enjoy 360° views of the city!

However, if you want to make it more fun, check out these restaurants:

  • Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq – Order a pink burger, add some sauce with a syringe, grab a candy man beverage and go have fun in the arcade. This place offers plenty of vintage games including Mario Kart, Dance Dance Revolution and NBA Hoops. Welcome back to the future! Address: 309 Broadway, Newmarket, Auckland 1023.
  • Kiss Kiss – Even the name of this restaurant is perfect for a date! Kiss Kiss is a Thai restaurant where flashy colours surround diners – the food is tasty too! Address: 1 Rocklands Avenue, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024.
  • Dr Rudi’s – If you like ten pin bowling, amazing views and good food and beer, this is the place for you. Address: Level 2/204 Quay Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010.
  • Dice and Forks – Hit this restaurant up if you’d like to challenge your date to a board game whilst enjoying hearty food. It’s the perfect casual indoor date. Address: 210 Victoria Street West, Freemans Bay, Auckland 1010.
Enjoy the City Lights or a Beautiful Sunset

The perfect date add-on, city lights and sunsets are a sure-fire winner.

We recommend enjoying a stunning sunset, followed up with Auckland City’s stunning night lights.

We recommend somewhere with a great view – perhaps Mount Eden or Little Shoal Bay.

The harbour by Silo Park can be nice too, as well as the light path.

Honestly, anywhere with a beautiful view will see you right.

If you enjoy photography, you might even like to snap a few shots of the lights around the city.

Create Your Own Food Tour

Auckland hosts various night markets and they really are fantastic. Instead of going to the restaurant, you can grab food from different food trucks, enjoying a wide range of different flavours.

With the buzz of the night market, this is a perfect high-energy, low-cost date!

Unique Date Ideas

Have a Laugh

Comedy clubs make for a great night out – there’s nothing like a good giggle to break the ice.

Pick your show that appeals, grab some munchies, and enjoy a fun date with your special someone.

Go on a Hunt for Glow Worms

If you’re looking for a nighttime date idea that’s a little different, we suggest heading out to spot glow worms.

There are several spots in Auckland where you can see them including the following spots:

  • Totara Park
  • Lovers Lane (it is a sign!)
  • Kepa Bush

Remember to bring a torch to travel along the path but be sure to turn it off and give your eyes a chance to adjust before expecting to see these glowing beauties.

If you’ve got a red-light torch that’s even better as your eyes won’t need as long to readjust.

Visit the Stardome Observatory & Planetarium

Join a guided tour of the different constellations and get told the story of the sky itself.

At the Stardome will get the chance to learn about our solar system and the Universe thanks to galleries and space exhibits.

The Stardome also organises also special events such as Music & Lasers – Pink Floyd Dark Side & The Wall every Tuesday and Ngā Whetū O Matariki for Matariki, so keep an eye out for these.

Rainy-Day Dates in Auckland

We cannot predict the weather – especially in Auckland – we all know that!

A rainy day doesn’t have to spoil your special occasion though.

These ideas make for a romantic rendezvous.

For Sports Lovers

Hit the Rock Climbing Wall

If you’d rather get active on a date, why not go rock climbing?

Auckland has a range of fantastic indoor climbing venues, catering from absolute beginners to experts.

It has been said that adrenaline is good for the heart and passion – let us know if it’s true!

Feel the Chill

Rug up warm and prepare for an exciting (but chilly) Auckland date!

If you’re looking for an excuse to hold hands, we recommend hearing along to Paradise ice skating. They have locations in both Avondale and Botany and supply all the gear you need (just wear warm clothes).

Join one of their normal sessions or consider arranging your visit for one of their special events, such as Blackout on Friday nights. Whilst there, you also might like to check out their mini-golf or laser tag.

Does skiing or snowboarding sound more like you? If so, Snow Planet could be the epic Auckland date idea that you’re looking for

Again, you can expect to hire all of the gear you need on site so just wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. If you have your own equipment, you’re welcome to use that too.

After hitting the slopes, we recommend paying the restaurant a visit. They’ve got a roaring fireplace that overlooks the ski-run and delicious Swiss fondue too.

Unique Indoor Activities

Play a Round of Mini Golf

Mini-golf can be heaps of fun and a great ice breaker.

You will find plenty of mini-golf in Auckland but Holey Moley is one of the best – especially for adults. The holes are based on TV, music and pop culture references and, best of all, you can enjoy a drink as you’re playing.

When you’ve finished your game we recommend chatting over a cocktail or bar snack.

Be a-Maze-d

For something totally unique, we recommend heading along to the Odyssey Sensory Maze.

Once inside you’ll have to find your way through the dark, checking out a number of different obstacles in the process.

Don’t worry though – this isn’t Spookers by any sense. Instead, you’ll marvel at an awesome series of illusions, lighting tricks, sound effects and even scents – it’s pretty wild!

Location: Queen Street inside the Sky World Entertainment Centre on the lower basement level.

Book: Odyssey Sensory Maze Entry [Special Promotion].

Become a Chef for the Night

Food has been featured on this list of the best Auckland date ideas, but we’ve got one more for the foodies amongst us!

A cooking class is a fantastic option to help break the ice. Of course, the goal is to have fun, discover new dishes and have a great time – and as an added bonus, you’ll add to your cooking repertoire at home.

Selwyn Community Education offers a wide range of cooking classes and they even have a programme called date night cooking. Go check it out!

Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding is available right across Auckland. You’ll find opportunities to hit the water from Waiheke Island, Rangitoto Island, Mission Bay, Long Bay, and Puhoi River – just to name a few spots. The choice is yours!

Tours operate in many of these locations so there’s no need to have your own gear.

If you’re looking for the ultimate date on the water, we recommend a sunset tour or a bioluminescent kayak – both of which are available in Auckland and come highly recommended.

Meet the Fish Whilst Snorkelling

If you prefer to be in the water instead of on the water, snorkelling could be for you!

You’ll see lots of fish at this natural marine reserve so don a snorkel and fins, and jump in with your date.
